GHS Auditorium...

I got a mailing from the GHHSAA about the renovation of the auditorium at GHS. When I was there, it was still a combo gymnasium and auditorium (gymatorium?) with folding chairs set up for assemblies and plays and talent shows and band concerts, etc. With the construction of additions to the school building (they began the year I graduated) new gym, music room, art room, the old auditorium became a full-time auditorium. There is move afoot to bring it up to (perhaps) a modern, state-of-the-art configuration. It's about time! Working in the theatre as I have (ever since early college days), I think this is a great plan. Let's support it and send them money. OFFSPRING GRADUATING

For what it's worth... my daughter Samantha is graduating from high school next week. She has been attending the Professional Performing Arts School (not the "Fame" school, but a smaller, more vibrant competitor) here in NYC since the sixth grade. Musical theatre, of course. Some of the shows Sam was in at PPAS: "Urinetown", "Honk", "Gypsy", and "Dear Edwina". Plus singing for the Mayor at Gracie Mansion, performing in Times Square with Eartha Kitt for the tree lighting ceremony, and being a "Broadway Baby" for a Kitty Carlisle Hart tribute at the Danny Kaye Playhouse. When she was 9 years old she was an understudy for two of the youngest von Trapp kids in "The Sound of Music" with Richard Chamberlain on Broadway, and of course, as some of you already know, she was a regular cast member in the ABC sitcom "Life With Bonnie". Onward and upward with the arts! She will attend Drew University over in Madison, NJ this fall (2009). She was considering Oberlin and Ohio University in Athens, but neither of those schools came across with enough financial aid (Drew has been very generous.) When I went to OSU, the tuition was $75.00 per quarter... total cost for one year: $225.00. Schools today (as you are probably aware) start at $75.00 just to apply. Cost for some schools: $47,000 for tuition, another $12,000 for room and board, and up to $6,000 - 7,000 for "fees"... that's as much as the tuition for a New York City kindergarten!

Over there on the right is a Bobcats slide show... a prize if you can guess when and where all these pictures were taken... Alright, here's a hint for those of us who flunked Latin class (twice)... pictures from the class of 1955's Twentieth Reunion, pictures of an unlikely bunch of '55 ers at a card game in 1956, and some more recent photos: Bill ('55) and Suze ('57) in Denver... BOBCATS IN SAN FRANCISCO

Just got back from San Francisco where I was working (if you can call it that) with Peter Schickele and the San Francisco Symphony (still PDQ Bach after all these years) saw Billy Bob Fink, his wife and son and their beautiful friend. They all came to the concert at Davies Hall. I had eaten some shellfish in a month with an "R" in it so I was sick as a dog. Could not go out with them to dinner... hardly got through the show... I went home to puke some more (I am still feeling as if I'd been poisoned three days later... imagine the 6 hour plane ride back home in that condition). Anyway, PDQ Bach and I will be at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware in February (dates later). Maybe all the Columbus folks can all get together!

WELL... HERE'S THE FIRST POST...

Welcome, those who have been asked to contribute... let's go. I'm going to be in San Francisco this weekend, so I will not be adding anything to this blog (unless the hotel has a computer room). So post away. Send pictures... old, new, unidentified. I have some from the 50's, and some from the 20th reunion of the class 0f 1955... but of course, these blogs eat up a whole lot of material. It's all about the past... and the future... and what about the present? I'm hoping to see Robert (Bill) Fink this weekend in San Francisco, and I'm sure he has some tales to tell. In the Bobcats slideshow to the right, there are only 2 pictures... Sylvia Hull sent her baby picture (that's her family around her) and Suzy Buchanan (class of 1957, I think) is seen with me in a photo taken in Denver this spring... so send some more... let's share the misery and anguish!
